Getting actively involved with the Stirling Players

Tell us a little about yourself; any prior theatre experience you may have had, and perhaps where your interests lie if you have any preferences.

A summary of the roles required for each production is listed below.

They are provided under four (4) headings to provide a ready appreciation of what is involved in the 'production process' to get a show onto the stage ready for performances.

  • 1. Pre-production

    Essential to ensure the show is ready for performance.

  • 2. Backstage

    Assist in the running of the show on stage.

  • 3. Front of House

    Assist in getting audience seated & enhancing their experience.

  • 4. Administration

    Assist with the overall running of the group.

Pre-production Roles

  • Set Designer - liaises with the director regarding set design, sources materials & coordinates set construction team.

  • Set Dresser - adds finishing touches to set:-furniture and accessories.

  • Costume Designer - reads the script and in liaison with the director designs and creates suitable costumes & accessories.

  • Properties Person - reads the script and lists what props are required & liaises with director and actors to ensure suitable props.

  • Poster - liaises with committee to design an eye-catching poster to depict the play

  • Programme - designs the programme & collates information and graphics required printing.

Backstage Roles

  • Stage Manager - manages the actual performances in the theatre: nothing happens without the SM's knowledge and approval once the show is in performance mode, on stage, in the Bio Box and front-of-house.

  • Backstage Crew - manage scene changes under direction of the Stage Manager.

  • Hair & Makeup - assists actors with hair style and make-up to best show their character plus touch-ups during performances.

  • Lighting Designer - creates a lighting design that matches the show's mood & the director's vision plus rigs and focuses the lights.

  • Lighting Operator - operates the lighting board during performances in response to SM cues.

  • Sound Designer - plans and sources the sound effects for the show.

  • Sound Operator - provides the sound effects during performances in response to SM cues.

Front of House Roles

  • Front of House Manager - compiles a FOH duties roster to cover all roles for each performance & liaises with the Bio Box regarding the appropriate timing for the opening and closing of the auditorium doors.

  • Raffle Ticket Seller - promotes the raffle prizes & skilfully and sensitively 'works' the foyer crowd to sell as many raffle tickets as possible.

  • Sherry & Programme Dispenser - fills glasses with complimentary sherry to be offered to all audience members as they enter the theatre plus offer of programme.

  • Usher - responsible for lighting of fires in the foyer if required & 'manning' the door, to check ticket numbers and direct people to their seats.

  • Box Office Person - ensures an on-line ticket sales list is available at each performance to handle any queries & handles door ticket sales, by EFTPOS or cash

Administration Roles

  • President - sets the strategic direction for The Stirling Players.

  • Vice President - assists the President wherever possible.

  • Secretary - manages all correspondence & keeps minutes of all committee meetings.

  • Treasurer - keeps track of the money & provides coordinated budgets for all productions.

  • Committee Member - helps out as needed & provides suggestions and support for the group.

  • Publicity - works as part of a team to maximise publicity for each production via print and social media.

  • Webmaster - keeps the website current & canvasses input on the design and content.

  • Ticketing Officer - sets up online ticketing site manages online bookings & provides ticket lists for each performance
